Gurgaon-Faridabad e-way still accident-prone, unsafe

Two years ago when the Gurgaon-Faridabad road was upgraded to an expressway, the residents of private posh colonies and Sikanderpur village on the road were hopeful about getting better infrastructure. But to date there are no streetlights and safety measures on the entire stretch, thus making it highly accident-prone and unsafe for commuters.

In what will be a major relief to south Delhi commuters bound for Gurgaon and Faridabad, Delhi government's public works department is undertaking construction of a four-lane road from Mehrauli-Gurgaon Road to Gurgaon-Faridabad road.

This 9km corridor is expected to help commuters from Mehrauli, Greater Kailash, Chhattarpur, Saket etc avoid jams on NH-8 and NH-2. The Rs 597-crore project will be funded by the urban development ministry, said officials.


"The road, called Mandi Road, exists now as a two-lane road riddled with potholes and without a central verge. Widening this road to a four-lane double carriageway will help commuters bypass the more long-winding and congested routes currently available," said PWD minister Raj Kumar Chauhan.

The road will begin on MG Road, go through Gwala Pahari and end at the Gurgaon-Faridabad road, providing the shortest connect with Faridabad from south Delhi, said officials.

Faridabad-Gurgaon 4-lane link opens, with toll plaza

Reliance Infrastructure Limited (RInfra), part of Reliance Group, has commenced the operation of its sixth road project through its Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV), GF Toll Road Private Limited from Gurgaon to Faridabad. The four laning of Gurgaon - Faridabad and two laning of Ballabhgarh - Sohna road have been completed and toll collections have been started.


Built at a cost of Rs.800 crore, Gurgaon Faridabad corridor connects major tourist destinations, industrial zones, corporate offices and International airport (T3) of Delhi. This 66 kms long corridor includes Gurgaon-Faridabad, Ballabhgarh-Sohna, Pali Bakri, Surajkund Road.

The 25 kms Gurgaon-Faridabad road starting from Gurgaon's Mehrauli Road at Sikanderpur and ending at the junction of Pali Bhakri road in Faridabad, involved widening of the existing two lane road to four lanes. The 6 kms of Municipal Corporation of Faridabad road leading to Surajkund and 3 kms of Crusher Zone Road were also constructed for the benefit of the commuters.

The 28 kms Ballabhgarh- Sohna (BS) road starting from Ballabhgarh (35kms on Delhi- Mathura Road) and ending at Rewari - Palwal involved re-construction and widening of two lanes. This stretch also includes 4 kms road from Pali village to Faridabad - Gurgaon junction.

Pay toll for zip drive from Gurgaon to Faridabad

Commuters using Gurgaon-Faridabad Road will have to pay toll from mid-April when this 25-km stretch becomes commercially operational. Car users will have to pay Rs 15 per trip while the user fee will be higher in case of other category vehicles.
Haryana PWD had given the contract of widening the road to Reliance Infrastructure on build-operate-&-transfer basis. "The work is almost over. Now, the developer has put the infrastructure in place to collect toll," said Mahesh Kumar, engineer-in-chief, Haryana PWD.

Reliance Infrastructure has emerged as the sole bidder for the 135 km greenfield Eastern Peripheral Expressway project covering Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh on build, operate and transfer (BOT) basis being offered by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI). The project would entail an investment of Rs. 2,676 crore and involves construction of greenfield six lane expressway with access control highway connecting Faridabad-Noida-Gaziabad-Sonepat which will also act as bypass to Delhi with a concession period of 20 years.

According to an official release here, once operational, the new expressway will ease traffic congestion, drastically cut travel time and ensure safe and comfortable movement of traffic. The company is at present in advanced stages of the four-laning of five National Highway projects in Tamil Nadu, covering a length of 400 km at a cost of Rs. 3,100 crore.

In another development, the company has bagged the four laning of Faridabad-Gurgaon road and upgradation of Ballabgarh-Sohana road on build, operate and transfer (BOT) basis. The project is expected to be completed in two years from the date of commencement with a concession period of 17 years.

Four-lane road to link Faridabad & Gurgaon

In a bid to ensure free flow of traffic on two important roads in NCR, Haryana PWD has awarded the widening of these two-lane roads to four-lane ones. Expected to be over in two years, Faridabad-Gurgaon Road (33.5 km) and Ballabhgarh-Sohna Road (32.6 km) will provide much-needed relief to daily commuters as well as to tourists heading from Delhi to getaway destinations like Badkhal Lake, Surajkund Craft Fair, Damdama Lake, Sohna and Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary.

PWD officials said the projects involving Rs 180 crore had been awarded to Reliance Infrastructure. However, the comfortable ride will come at a cost Rs 20 per trip that will be collected as toll fee. Concession period of the project is 17 years.

According to Haryana PWD officials, the project also includes bringing in necessary changes in the road geometry to make them safe. At present, there are several horizontal and vertical curves on the Gurgaon-Faridabad Road, leading to fatal accidents. Hence, there is a necessity to redesign the stretch to make it safe for commuters.

Initially, the project cost was Rs 230 crore, but it was reduced to Rs 180 crore after reviewing the scope of work. The Gurgaon-Faridabad Road starts from Gurgaon-Mehrauli Road at Sikanderpur and ends in Faridabad. The stretch, which passes through crushers' zone, is generally used by truckers carrying quarry materials.

Similarly, the the Ballabhgarh-Sohna Road takes off from Ballabhgarh on Delhi-Mathura road on NH-2 and terminates at its junction with Rewari-Palwal road on NH-71B. As per the bid document, Gurgaon-Faridabad Road runs through urban areas as well as rural habitats. The Ballabgarh-Sohna Road passes through plain terrain of the Aravalis. To undertake the widening, nearly 1,945 trees have to be felled on the Gurgaon-Faridabad stretch and another 3,778 have to be cut for Ballabhgarh-Sohna corridor. "Compensatory afforestation will be done.

As per the agreement, the concessionaire will plant and maintain saplings along the stretches,'' said a PWD official. There will be two toll plazas on Gurgaon-Faridabad road one on crushers' zone road and the other on Pali-Bhakri road.

"There are too many openings on this stretch, so we have made the provision of two toll collection points, but no commuter has to pay twice during one trip,'' Haryana PWD secretary K K Jalan said. Similarly, there will be two toll plazas on the other link road.
